Süleyman KARAMAN

Director General and Chairman of the Board

Turkish State Railways

Born in 1956 in Erzincan province of Turkey Mr. Karaman graduated from Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 1978. In 1981 he received his master's degree (MSc) in the same university.

Between1979-1981 he worked for a private company carrying out prototype and modernization studies and executed compliance tests for the first Turkish tractor and some farming machinery.

In 1981 he returned to ITU as a professor's assistant and lectured on engineering drawing and machinery.

Between1984-1994 he worked for a private automotive company where he became Deputy Director General and a Member of the Board.

In 1994 he was appointed as Deputy Director General of IETT ( Istanbul Transportation Authority) of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and undersigned many new projects. During this period he carried out studies both in Europe and USA and presented papers in the 1 st and 2 nd International Transport Symposiums. He was a Board Member of ISBAK, ISTON, ISMER and BELTUR, affiliates of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality .

On 7 January 2003 he was appointed as Director General and Chairman of the Board Turkish State Railways.

He is married with three children and speaks English.
